Very excited to get back my hallmarking! Love the scale of the marks on this piece. I think they really enhance it. Cant wait to get it home and light the candles.

The unexpected nature of research...

Its fascinating the avenues design research leads you down. If someone said to you I'm looking to design a piece of tableware for chocolates, I'm sure Mondrian would not be your first suggestion for research avenues. Actually this extraordinarily famous painting has brought me a long way. The intersecting lines, bold colours and irregular sized boxes had provided great stimuli for a high end chocolate display that i am currently working on. Clearly fine art and design really can relate and inform.

Richard Deacon at Tate Britain

This was an absolutely stunning exhibition at the Tate Britain. Its not a hugh show and its expensive to get in but its absolutely stunning. The scale of the works really can't be explained, it it one thing to look at am an image, it is another entirely to stand in, under, next to or peer around something. I adored the raw materials and the evidence of the making process. One of the better exhibitions i have ever been to.

It's wet but it's Beautiful...

With the huge surge in wet weather this winter and the usual rise in Thames water level it is a little wet in these parts. There are some disadvantages, can't use much water, can't flush toilets often, can't drive in most directions and things keep floating away. All in all though, its really very beautiful and somewhat refreshing. Man really isn't so powerful after all. Water will always conquer and we can always  live on boats. I would quite like it to stay. Its not often you get geese swimming past the kitchen window.

Angelika Studios is an art gallery and working studio run by six wonderful artists. I was privileged to be invited to this evenings private view showcasing work by all the in-house artists. It was a stunning show with great work and equally great people. Adore the mixed media and colour involved in Lindall Pearce's work. Great evening and well worth a visit if you get a chance to visit. http://www.angelikastudios.co.uk

Dartington Product Proposal

After months of work and planning and model making and prototypes and CAD design and material experiments; today was the day. A five am set off left us trundling along the motorway past bristol watching the sun rise and the sky clear. Armed with all three finalists work crammed into a car that was far too small we drove the epic distance down to Dartington Crystal. The final stretch of the journey is beautiful and quite something to drive. The whole day was wonderful. It proved to be incredibly exciting and a little scary. Cant wait to see what the company think of the designs after their January meeting.

Work Experience through Goldsmiths Company

This week i have been extremely privileged to be  given the opportunity to work with silversmith Stephen Randall. I spent the last week in the stunning coastal town of Whitstable and have every intention of retuning to this quintessentially british town. The weeks experience was provided by the wonderful people at The Goldsmiths Company to allow me the time, expertise and facilities to make my competition entry. Below is a series of photographs that illustrate the five day journey that lead to a working silver prototype. Stephen Randall has been wonderful, I have done my best to act like a sponge for his wealth of knowledge. The work wasn't quite completed in the 5 days; there is still a little filing and polishing to be done. Photos of the finished work will be posted shortly.

I was wandering through Lewis today. Its a stunning town not far from Brighton that plays host to a number of festivals and events. I happened across a delightful silversmith with some great work. He shoed me an ingenious technique… Hallmarking pre making / finishing. This enables you one to avoid distortion to final work from the punches. Brilliant.

The beginnings or research for my final major project. This will be to create interactive works that can be used in a home environment to bring out the child in people. I want to enable people to have fun in the home with everyday products.

Today was an absolutely amazing experience at the Goldsmiths Education Centre. I was recently awarded second place in the Young Designers Silversmiths Competition which is run by The Goldsmiths Company. As part of this award I have been privileged to spend a day touring the workshops with curator Rosemary Ransome-Wallis and talking to silversmiths Clive Burr and Grant MacDonald. Over a wonderful lunch I was able to ask a wealth of questions regarding silver, business and the industry in general. Hopefully this won't be the last time I have the opportunity to pick the brains of these experienced and successful people.

Glass blowing into Optic Moulds

15/3/2013

Picture
This week we have started to experiment with colour and optic moulds for the first time. The moulds themselves are beautiful things and I would love to find out how they are made. I will add this to my to learn list.

Playing with colour is great. It doesnt work the same as clear glass but this makes it a little easier to control because its harder. The main problem with it is that you can no longer see the inside of the glass and therefore how large the internal bubble is.

The optic moulds are great, the ridges on the inside both shape and cool the glass leaving thick ridges when the form is blown out. Hopefully i will post photos of the finished pieces once they are cooled down.

Designing a pendant.

Design inspiration for a Gold and Diamond pendant for Jewellers Michael Jones.
Picture

This was a fabulous brief to design a pendant for Michael Jones Jewellers. With complete free reign over inspiration and form this was and exciting and challenging project. A strict budget and the requirement to have both gold and Diamond included induced extreme size restrains.

My usual large scale tenancies had to be curtailed while at the same time as creating something unique and beautiful. The berif also stipulated that CAD technology be used to both design and lake the final work.

Seen pictured above is the inspiration avenue i took. Based on delicate structures and ice formations the final pendant would retail at around £895 and be made in Rose Gold with an Emerald Cut Diamond.

The design work was put on hold today for a while for something a little more altruistic. It has been a thoroughly enjoyable and rewarding day:
After several weeks planning, collecting making and learning we spent the day raising money for Scannappeal who provide hospital equipment for the Thames Valley area. A fantastic cause and a fantastic experience. We successfully raised the largest sum of money and the winner of the Christmas hamper was so grateful. His daughter has been helped greatly by the machinery provided by the Scannappeal charity.
